I have been lucky enough to have travelled the world photographing a diverse range of sporting events, and the Class 1 power boating series in Dubai was an photographic assignment with a difference. These powerful boats can reach speeds of up to an unbelievable 160mph and travel between 55-75nm during the race. This picture which was used on the back-page of The Independant was taken from a UAE Army helicopter with the doors locked open. I was attached to a retaining harness so that we can sit with our feet hanging out of the door. The helicopters fly almost at the top of a wave and there is absolutely no room for error by the pilot. The choppers cannot keep up with the boats in a calm sea because of their immense speed so they and have fly at an arc. It is the most exhilarating and probably one of the most dangerous sports photography assignments I have ever been on, and there have been many !
The image above is to give you an idea !
